I have the same problem. However, I have a stranger case.
Over time, I installed Java 1.4.6, installed Java 1.5 (and uninstalled 1.4.6), and lastly, updated 1.5 to Revision 4 (the current Java release on the Sun web site).
Maestro works fine on that computer.

On a brand new computer, it came with Java 1.3 (go figure) and I installed 1.5 Revision 4 (and uninstalled 1.3). Then, I installed Meastro. The 3D failed.

System stats:
1st computer:
ATI (for laptops)
WinXP Pro

New computer:
ATI (for PCs)
WinXP Pro SP2

So I'm not sure what's going on.
